Most AI in Google Ads works before the click, on bids, audiences and creative. Post-click AI works on the visit: it reads the signals in each paid click, builds an intent profile (why this person clicked and what stage they are at), and responds on the landing page with the help that fits. More visitors engage, and leads and calls arrive with their context.
- Pre-click AI optimises who clicks; post-click AI optimises what happens next.
- Every paid click carries 42+ signals that reveal intent.
- Classify intent into research, consideration or decision, with a confidence level.
- Feed outcomes back so the ad platform learns from better signals.
Pre-click AI vs post-click AI
Smart Bidding, Performance Max and AI-generated assets decide who sees your ad and what it says. They stop at the click. The landing page then treats every visitor the same, which is why paid conversion rates stay flat even as targeting improves.
| Pre-click AI | Post-click AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Works on | Bids, audiences, creative | The landing page visit |
| Optimises | Who clicks | What the visitor does next |
| Main signal | Platform data | The click itself plus on-page behaviour |
| Output | Cheaper or better clicks | Engaged visits, leads and calls with context |
Step 1 · Read the signals in the click
A paid click arrives with more than 42 signals in seven families: search and keyword, campaign and ad, placement and network, device and setting, place and time, visit history and on-page behaviour. Search campaigns carry the richest signals because the keyword and match type are known. Performance Max, Demand Gen, Display and Video carry fewer, so the page should let visitors self-select (for example, by offering a few broad questions).
| Campaign type | Signal richness | Best post-click approach |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Rich: keyword, match type, ad | Answer the question the search implies |
| Performance Max | Partial: asset group, network | Tag asset groups by intent; offer a short question menu |
| Demand Gen / Display / Video | Lighter: placement, audience | Lead with broad questions and let the visitor choose |
Step 2 · Build an intent profile
Join the signals with what the brand knows about the campaign (offers, audiences, objections, voice) and classify the visitor: research (learning), consideration (comparing, price checking, feature matching, trust checking) or decision (ready to enquire, book or call). Give the profile a confidence level. When confidence is low, ask rather than assume.
Step 3 · Respond to the moment
Three moments cover most paid visits: the visitor is not ready yet (let them save and return), has a question (answer it where they read) or wants to talk (start the call on their question). Each response should be small, optional and built from approved content.
Step 4 · Capture the why, and send it back
When the visitor acts, attach what they searched, their stage and what they engaged with. Send that to your CRM, and send outcomes back to Google Ads through offline conversion import or enhanced conversions for leads, so bidding learns from engaged, qualified visits rather than raw form fills.
How to measure it
Use page engagement rate on paid traffic (engaged sessions and engaged time) against a holdout as the leading signal, then context-captured leads or calls per 100 paid clicks as the outcome. Treat Quality Score, CPC and ROAS changes as side effects, not promises.
